QUIRKS: Doesn't make list so much as little notes about things.

Even as a small child Xiaolian was never the type to blindly give her trust to anyone and being old has never instantly earned someone her respect. Though it's really not that difficult to earn at least a little respect from her (stand up for yourself, stand up for someone else, be crafty and wise, there are many, many ways). Earning her trust is certainly more difficult, but worth the effort. She would follow a worthy leader into the depths of Hell, and once you have earned her trust she'll always have your back.

For most of her young life she's been the quiet force that holds her family together. Whenever something horrible happens she pulls herself up off the ground and goes about fixing it the best she can. She's never had her head in the clouds, always been very grounded and listens to her head over her heart. She's always looking at situations in a logical manner that tends to make outsiders think she's a cold fish. It's not true, in the least, but she's comfortable/happy to let others believe it is. Emotions are messy and can easily get you into trouble after all.

You might assume from her appearance that Xiaolian was loud, or that she liked to shove her opinion down others throats, to make them listen to what she had to say, but you'd be wrong. It's not that she can't be, but that she finds it a bit pointless. If someone chooses to not hear what you have to say, saying it loud will not change this, it will only make your throat hurt. She doesn't mind that people assume this, though, if anything she encourages it, uses it as a means to keep people pushed away. A lot of the time just the people she keeps company with/her appearance is enough to keep people from giving her trouble and over the years she's grown to like and appreciate this.

As you may have guessed, Xiaolian isn't the most friendly person. She's not exactly mean, but she does come across as rude a lot. It's just that, while she has a seemingly endless amount of patience for some things, foolish/stupid people are not one of them (unless they're already one of her people). She does have a strong sense of pride and dislikes seeing people who don't deserve to be being hurt, but overall she greatly prefers the company of animals to that of humans. They're just so much simpler.

It may not be believable, considering just how often she doesn't show up to class, but Xiaolian is actually very reliable. She does her work and mostly passes her classes, she just doesn't particularly like sitting in a classroom. If she has somewhere to be, she's almost never late. She remembers important dates and is, overall, pretty organized. She is the quiet force holding her family together, after all, which includes making sure they don't miss important meetings.
apperance
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5'2 / 114
BUILD: Boyish
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Multiple tattoos on her arm, leg, and back. Tongue & Monroe piercing.
EYE COLOR: Brown
HAIR COLOR: Subject to change, currently black.
MOVEMENT: Long strides and quick pace.

Despite her petite frame she is rather long and lean. She lacks any of the soft curves that would immediately speak to her status as a female. She has an oval face with a strong nose and a soft, full moth with a cupid's bow. And while she plays with the color and style, her hair is always kept on the short side.

When she bothers to go to class, she wears her uniform. Except her shirt is never tucked in and her skirt is, more likely then not, shorter then it should be. When left to her own devices her taste in fashion tends to be on the limited side. Most often she can be found in a pair of well fitting jeans, as they're just more practical then anything else and comfortable. The types of shirts she wears varies from button ups of some type, to loose fitting blouses (with and without sleeves), to tank tops. If, for some reason, she has to get dolled up, she tends to wear dresses that show off her tattoos.
family

Gao Feng b. 18-04-1953
Feng is as serious as the day is long, especially after the death of his wife. More then a little terrifying when he's angry and unflinching. But he would do anything for his children.
PB: Andy Lau

Gao Heng b. 22-08-1984
Heng has very little in common with Feng. He rarely takes anything seriously, often gets himself into sticky situations, and tends to run off at the mouth. He's a bit of a playboy, cocky as all hell, and likely to get himself killed.
PB: Edison Chen

history
Gao Feng was born in 1953, to a father who'd already been living a shady life for many years. This very much colored the way he was raised and later the way he would raise his own children. A few years later, in another city altogether, Zhōu Liu was born. Their lives were night and day. By the time Feng was 16 he was well on his way to following in his father's foot steps, he was especially gifted in the art of car theft, but more often was lumped in with a few other young males to extort small businesses. That same year, Liu would begin wizard school.

During a trip to Hong Kong quite a few years down the road, Liu would meet Feng in an unlikely situation. By which I mean despite being on the run from an angry policeman, when he plowed into her, he paused to make sure she was alright before taking off again. A bit startled by the whole thing, she stunned the policeman, which allowed Feng a clean getaway. Neither expected to see the other again, but fate had other plans. The next day they ran into one another in the market, wide eyed when they realized who they'd just bumped into, they chatted for a bit. One thing led to another and by the end of the week they were stealing passionate kisses in alleyways.

Fast forward a few years more, to after the young couple has wed. Feng hadn't given up his criminal life style, but like many other men in the triad he had gotten a real job too. Nothing flashy, mind you, a simple factory job, but certainly more respectful with a new wife and a baby on the way. Liu stayed home, especially once Heng had been born and it became clear he, like his mother, was magical.

Fast forward another few years, Liu is pregnant with their second child now, and despite still working at the factory, Feng's work within the triad was becoming of a more violent nature. Something that would, not long after Xiaolian's birth, cost Liu her life. While Heng was devastated by their mother's death, young Xiaolian didn't understand and bounced back from it fairly quickly.

In the next few years Heng would grow angrier and angrier with the world, and despite being away at magical school most of the year, he began to follow in Feng's foot steps. Xiaolian, however, was only just beginning to show that she too had inherited her mother's magic but unlike her brother, who wasn't very good at keeping anything to himself, she was pretty good at keeping it under wraps. A few small instances sure, but nothing that she thought was worth worrying about too much.

Despite being the youngest member of the Gao family, she was by far the most organized. With the lack of parental guidance, however, she rarely went to class since she figured keeping her grades up was all that really mattered. Instead she used the time to clean or walk to the market, which was luckily not far from their home, to make sure they had food to eat. When Heng came home for one of the longer school breaks, he caught on to her truancy, and decided she could help him. Mostly she played lookout, using her innocent looks to buy him time.

This, paired with her own truancy, was enough to catch the SS!wizards attention. They figured she would be perfect filler for their school. Feng, who was rarely home, having given up his job at the factory to focus on his criminal career, thought the school sounded like an excellent place for her. If for no other reason then it would keep her safe from his life (there were always threats against him, but recently there had been some against his family too). Seeing it was important to her dad, Xiaolian easily agreed to the transfer.

None of them had any idea the darker purpose of the school. It wasn't long before Xiaolian's reported by another student for using magic, real magic, as she was insulted by the crap they were being taught. The classes themselves were all horrible, she disagreed with everything they were being taught and would occasionally skip a class. The punishment was always harsh, which in a way just made her more determined to skip. She would have told her father and gotten saved from the school, had he not gotten into a bit of trouble and gotten caught by the police not long after she started school. By the time he'd gotten out the sham school was no more and the wizards who'd saved them had discovered Xiaolian was, in fact, a wizard too and were busy trying to locate him. The family she was staying with in the meantime was kind, went out of their way to make her comfortable, and tried to teach her little, useful things about magic.

All in all, they were largely the reason she didn't decided she hated magic. Her brother also helped by telling her all about the real magic school in Yunnan, and how great the professors all were. She was still a little wary by the time she was sent off for her first year of wizard school, but she trusted Heng's judgment. At first she went to every class, but as she grew more comfortable with the school and professors, she fell back to her old ways of only attending important classes or when she felt like it while still turning in all her work and managing decent grades.

In her second year Heng moved into town, he'd grown to really like it while he was there and it just seemed like a good time. Xiaolian didn't mind in the least, since it gave her somewhere to hide/visit whenever she made it into town. As she had a habit of organizing his life/apartment whenever she came to visit, it didn't take long to realize how her brother was making his extra cash (hawking fake designer pieces) and that, paired with her own habit to be wandering town when she shouldn't be, led her to finding all sorts of nooks and crannies to hide out in.

This knowledge would eventually lead to her friendship with Hong-li. After she saved him from getting busted by a muggle policeman it seemed like the two were bumping into one another quite often. They started to talk and eventually their conversations led them to realize they'd both been at the sham school and before long the two were actually friends. More then that, the two had become best friends. They would even help her brother sell his merchandise on occasion.

Then came the bombing, which made her father nervous, but really, aside from making her wary of all the new students pouring into her little school, had little effect on Xiaolian. Since her father was nervous about the bombing, it was easy for him to agree to sending her to the Japan school, and while the idea didn't thrill her, knowing Hong-li was going and wanted her to come with was enough reason for her to also agree to go.
